 lopment in resource extraction industries. Through the\nparticipation of i
 ndustry experts\, policymakers\, and local and\ntransnational civil societ
 y actors\, the conference will bring\ntogether a myriad of experiences int
 ended to generate a rich but\ncritical discussion of more effective strate
 gies for using\nfor-profit economic activity to generate sustainable econo
 mic\ndevelopment. More specifically\, the conference and workshop will\nfo
 cus on 3 questions:\n1) What are the challenges faced in trying to establi
 sh\neffective medium and long-term collaborations for promoting\nsustainab
 le development between extractive industries and the\ncommunities they wor
 k in\;\n2) Are there effective practices or models that can be\nidentified
  for achieving this goal\; and\n3) how can government policies and the act
 ivities of relevant\nnon-governmental organizations facilitate such public
 -private\nsector partnerships?\nParticipants have been invited because of 
 their relevant\nexperiences in the public\, private and civil society sect
 ors with\nthe expectation that they will  address these three questions\nf
 rom the perspective of those experiences.\nReception to follow opening ses
