Her work relates\ndirectly to three of the most pressing environmental issues of our\ntime: the maint enance of biodiversity\, the stability of\nworld climate\, and the sustain ability of forests.\nFor three decades\, she has climbed trees on four con tinents\,\nusing mountain-climbing techniques\, construction cranes\, walk ways\,\nand hot air balloons to explore the world of animals and plants\nt hat live in the treetops. In 1994 she realized that there was no\ncentral database for storing and analyzing the research she was\ngathering\, so sh e invented one. This state-of-the-art repository\,\ncalled the Big Canopy Database\, is credited with speeding\ncross-disciplinary collaboration jus t as a common database\nrevolutionized the mapping of the human genome.\n  \nNalini Nadkarni is known for using nontraditional pathways to\nraise awa reness of nature’s importance\, working with artists\,\ndancers\, musician s\, and even loggers. Her most recent project\,\nfunded by the Washington State Department of Corrections\, engages\nscientists and prisoners in col laboration to carry out research\nprojects in conservation and restoration biology. Inmates have\nraised endangered frogs\, prairie plants\, and but terflies\, which are\nthen released from captivity to the wild\, giving pr isoners rare\naccess to nature\, as well as a sense of accomplishment and \nconnection to doing something good. In recognition of this work and\nmor e\, she was a recipient of the National Science Board’s “Public\nService A ward” this year\, which honors an individual that has made\nsubstantial co ntributions in increasing public understanding of\nscience in the United S tates.\n DTSTART:20120308T230000Z DTEND:20120309T003000Z LOCATION:New Residence Hall\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H2X 3P8\, 3625 avenue du Parc SUMMARY:91˿Ƶ School of Environment Annual Public Lecture URL:/channels/event/mcgill-school-environment-annual-p ublic-lecture-215154 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
