 India.\nThe event starts at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday\, March 13\, 2012\, and\n
 will be held at Paragraph Bookstore (2220 91Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ College). All are\nwelcom
 e.\n\nUnfinished Gestures presents the social\nand cultural history of cou
 rtesans in South India who are generally\ncalled devadasis\, focusing on t
 heir encounters with\ncolonial modernity in the nineteenth and early twent
 ieth centuries.\nFollowing a hundred years of vociferous social reform\, i
 ncluding a\n1947 law that criminalized their lifestyles\, the women in\nde
 vadasi communities contend with severe social stigma and\neconomic and cul
 tural disenfranchisement. Adroitly combining\nethnographic fieldwork with 
 historical research\, Davesh Soneji\nprovides a comprehensive portrait of 
 these marginalized women and\nunsettles received ideas about relations amo
 ng them\, the aesthetic\nroots of their performances\, and the political e
 fficacy of social\nreform in their communities.\nPoignantly narrating the 
 history of these women\, Soneji argues\nfor the recognition of aesthetics 
 and performance as a key form of\nsubaltern self-presentation and self-con
 sciousness. Ranging over\ncourtly and private salon performances of music 
 and dance by\ndevadasis in the nineteenth century\, the political\nmobiliz
 ation of devadasi identity in the twentieth\ncentury\, and the post-reform
  lives of women in these communities\ntoday\, Unfinished Gestures charts t
 he historical fissures\nthat lie beneath cultural modernity in South India
