 hem in an informal Q & A.\nWith guests:\nEmily Jansons\, Executive Office 
 of the International\nDevelopment Research Centre (IDRC) Emily Jansons\nre
 cently started working in the Executive Office of the\nInternational Devel
 opment Research Centre (IDRC) in Ottawa as a\nResearch Award Recipient\, w
 hich includes conducting herown research\non private philanthropy in India
 .  Emily completed her\nBachelor’s degree at Queen’s University and her Ma
 ster’s degree at\n91Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ\, both in History and International De
 velopment\nStudies.  Prior to working at IDRC\, Emily worked at 91Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ\nUn
 iversity for over a year.  During her undergraduate program\nshe studied o
 n formal exchange in both China and The Netherlands\nand volunteered with 
 the university branch of Oxfam.  In China\nshe interned with the NGO Roots
  & Shoots (a Jane\nGoodall Institute program)\, working with an unregister
 ed primary\nschool for children of migrant workers in Shanghai.  Through\n
 the AIESEC Global Internship program she went to Jaipur\,\nIndia\, where s
 he worked with a local NGO that provides education to\ndisabled children f
 rom low-income populations.  Emily has\npublished in Cuizine: The Journal 
 of Canadian Food\nCultures and Undercurrent: The Canadian Undergraduate\nJ
 ournal of Development Studies.\n \nJonathan Dignan\, Industry Canada Jonat
 han\nDignan currently works for Industry Canada as the department's\nspeec
 hwriter. In this role\, he writes speeches for the\nMinister of Industry\,
  and the Ministers of State for Science and\nTechnology\, and Small Busine
 ss and Tourism. Before assuming\nhis current position in July 2011\, Jonat
 han served as\na Senior Communications Advisor for the department. He has
 \nalso been a researcher for the Public Policy Forum\, a national\npublic 
 policy organization\, as well as a policy analyst for\nthe Canadian Intern
 ational Development Agency. At both the Public\nPolicy Forum and at CIDA\,
  Jonathan worked extensively on\nissues related to Canadian foreign and de
 velopment policy and has\nspent the past few years volunteering in various
  capacities to help\nraise awareness in Canada about important issues in\n
 development.\n \nGabrielle Tardif\, Canadian Executive Service\nOrganizati
 on CESO\n'I have always been interested in languages so I learnt\nItalian\
 , Spanish and German by way of classes\, travels and two\nstudent exchange
 s I did to Lecce\, Italy & Siegen\, Germany\; my\nhost partners are still 
 my best friends.  My first development\nexperience was in Lima\, Peru wher
 e I worked for a catholic NGO\ncalled Fraternidad Cristiana de Personas En
 fermas y con\nDiscapacidad for 6 months coordinating patients' care. I wen
 t back\nto do administrative work with Disabled Peoples' International. I
 \nhave always volunteered either with the elderly\, with troubled\nyouth a
 nd even in stores similar to Ten Thousand Villages in New\nZealand.  I hav
 e a bachelor's degree from Mcgill\; Major in\nInternational Development St
 udies\, Minors in Italian & German\nLanguage.  I graduated in 2010\, start
 ed a Master's degree in\nUrban Planning at the Université de Montréal and 
 changed program to\nstudy Project Management at HÉC. I started working at 
 my present\norganization in 2011 as an intern\, then as a Project Assistan
 t for\nthe Africa-Haiti Program and then in my current position as Client
 \nRelations Manager\, managing the Aboriginal program for Quebec and\nthe 
 Atlantic.'\n \nCandice Dandurand\, DFAIT Candice began\nher international 
 career with the United Nations Development Fund\nfor Women (UNIFEM\, now U
 N Women) in Nigeria 2006 when she undertook\nfield work as part of her Mas
 ters in International and Comparative\nPolitics (Université de Montréal) w
 hich focused  on gender and\ndevelopment and democratization in West Afric
 a. With an\nundergraduate degree in journalism from Concordia\, Candice wo
 rked\non promoting women’s participation in the political process and the
 \nrepatriation of Liberian refugees from Nigeria.   A path\nin working in 
 and on fragile states was forged when starting at the\nCanadian Internatio
 nal Development Agency in 2006\, working on\nchildren and armed conflict\,
  human rights\, transitional justice and\npeacebuilding in a multilateral 
 context. In 2009\, Candice became a\nForeign Service officer and joined th
 e Stabilization and\nReconstruction Task Force (START) and was responsible
  until August\n2011 for the deployment of Canadian police officers to peac
 e\noperations in Haiti\, Afghanistan\, Sudan\, the Democratic Republic of
 \nthe Congo and Côte D’Ivoire.\nCandice is currently a senior policy advis
 or in START working on\ncomplex emergencies in fragile states responsible 
 for the\ninstitutional relationship between Canada and the United Nations
 \nHigh Commissioner for Refugees and refugee\, migration and\nhumanitarian
  assistance in Sub-Saharan Africa and frequently\ntravels to Africa.\n \nM
 aria Ghazzaoui\, Canadian International Development\nAgency\n- Development
  Officer\nMaria works in the Government of Canada\, at the Canadian\nInter
 national Development Agency (CIDA)\, in the Middle East and\nNorth Africa 
 unit. She manages projects in the economic growth and\neducation sectors i
 n Jordan\, in cooperation with the Government of\nJordan as well as Canadi
 an and Jordanian NGOs. Given her passion\nfor the field of international d
 evelopment\, she has pursued her\neducation in this field up to the master
 's level. Her favourite\npastime is travelling in the Middle East and in L
 atin America. She\nhas\, over time\, volunteered for many organizations\, 
 such as the\nSociety for International Development\, and the Institute of 
 Public\nAdministration of Canada.\n \n \nEthan J. Kay\, Biolite\nEthan is 
 a social entrepreneur and academic focused on building\ninclusive business
 es for low-income households in developing\ncountries.\nAs Managing Direct
 or of Emerging Markets for BioLite\, Ethan is\ncommercializing an innovati
 ve smokeless cookstove for low-income\nfamilies in developing countries. P
 rior to BioLite\, Ethan designed\nand launched partnerships betweencorpora
 tions and NGOs in India and\nBangladesh to give poor rural women access to
  sustainable\nlivelihoods and villagers access to sanitation\, nutrition\,
  and\nclean energy. He helped build a distribution channel in rural India
 \nto supply essential goods and services (e.g.\, sanitation and\ngroceries
 ) to low-income households\, and served for six years as an\nadvisor to Sw
 ayam Shikshan Prayog [SSP]\, an Indian microfinance and\nrural community d
 evelopment NGO. He also helped design a‘Social\nBusiness’ between Grameen 
 Bank and a US Multi-National to retail\nlowcost\, micro-nutritional supple
 ments to malnourished villagers in\nrural Bangladesh. As a 2011-12 Sauvé S
 cholar at 91Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ\,\nand Ph.D. candidate andFulbright Scholar at
  the University of\nOxford (University College)\, Ethan is studying how to
  effectively\nstructure and implement corporate-NGO cleancookstove partner
 ships\nin India. He holds an M.Phil. in Politics (Comparative Government)
 \nfrom Oxford\, and a B.S. in Economics from the Wharton School\,\nUnivers
 ity of Pennsylvania\, where he was a Benjamin Franklin\nScholar and a Sol 
 Feinstone Award recipient. After Wharton\, Ethan\nspent two years in the p
 rivate sector focused on emerging markets.\nEthan is a Board Member of Re-
 Emerging World\, an emerging market\nstrategic advisory firm\; Hands Up Fo
 r Darfur\, which raises funds\nfor local relief organizations in Sudan\; a
 nd Vice President of the\nBoard of Ahuyu\, a U.S.-basednon-profit that is 
 expanding access to\nclean cookstoves for poor people in Latin America. He
  is also a\nSenior Fellow of Humanity In Action\; served as a district lea
 der in\nOhio on the 2008 Obama Presidential Campaign\; worked as an econom
 ic\ndevelopment consultant to UNDP in Chernobyl\; and served as Head\nofth
 e U.S. Team on Climate Change for the G8 Research Group.\n\n\n\n \n
