  A full programme of panel\nconferences will be held on Saturday\, from 9h

 uanita Westmoreland-Traoré\nThe Honourable Juanita Westmoreland-Traoré of
 \nthe Court of Québec is the first Black judge appointed in the\nhistory o
 f Québec. She also holds the distinction of being the\nfirst Black dean of
  a Canadian law school (University of\nWindsor).\nShe was born in Verdun (
 Montréal) in 1942 of immigrant parents\nfrom the former British colony of 
 Guyana. After earning a law\ndegree from the Université de Montréal and a 
 doctorate from the\nUniversité de Paris II\, she practised law until 1976.
  During the\n1970s\, she also lectured on law at the Université de Montréa
 l and\nat the Université du Québec à Montréal.\nIn addition to her academi
 c engagements\, Judge\nWestmoreland-Traoré was a member of the Office de p
 rotection des\nconsommateurs du Québec from 1979 to 1983 and a Commissione
 r for\nthe Canadian Human Rights\nCommission from 1983 to 1985. In 1985\, 
 she became the first\nchair of Québec's Conseil des communautés culturelle
 s et de\nl'immigration\, and served as the Employment Equity Commissioner 
 of\nOntario from 1991 to 1995. In 1996\, she became the Dean of the\nFacul
 ty of Law at the University of Windsor. The Honourable Juanita\nWestmorela
 nd-Traoré also served as an advisor in the Truth\nCommission in Haiti (Com
 mission nationale de vérité et de justice).\nIn 1999\, she was appointed t
 o the Court of Québec for the District\nof Montreal.\nJudge Westmoreland-T
 raoré\, an Officer of the National Order of\nQuébec\, has received numerou
 s awards including: a medal from the\nUniversité de Montréal for her extra
 ordinary contribution to human\nrights\; the Canadian Jewish Congress' Ala
 n Rose Award for human\nrights\; the Montreal Association of Black Busines
 s Persons and\nProfessionals' Jackie Robinson Achievement Award\; the Cana
 dian Bar\nAssociation's Touchstone Award for her outstanding contribution 
 to\nthe promotion of equality in Canada's legal community\; the Mérite\nCh
 ristine-Tourigny\, awarded by the Barreau du Québec for her social\ninvolv
 ement and contribution to the advancement of women in the\nlegal professio
 n\; and the Droits et Libertés award from the Québec\nCommission des droit
 s de la personne et les droits de la jeunesse.\nShe is also the recipient 
 of honorary doctorates from the\nUniversity of Ottawa and l'Université du 
 Québec à Montréal.\n \n
