She also holds the distinction of being the\nfirst Black dean of a Canadian law school (University of\nWindsor).\nShe was born in Verdun ( Montréal) in 1942 of immigrant parents\nfrom the former British colony of Guyana. After earning a law\ndegree from the Université de Montréal and a doctorate from the\nUniversité de Paris II\, she practised law until 1976. During the\n1970s\, she also lectured on law at the Université de Montréa l and\nat the Université du Québec à Montréal.\nIn addition to her academi c engagements\, Judge\nWestmoreland-Traoré was a member of the Office de p rotection des\nconsommateurs du Québec from 1979 to 1983 and a Commissione r for\nthe Canadian Human Rights\nCommission from 1983 to 1985. In 1985\, she became the first\nchair of Québec's Conseil des communautés culturelle s et de\nl'immigration\, and served as the Employment Equity Commissioner of\nOntario from 1991 to 1995. In 1996\, she became the Dean of the\nFacul ty of Law at the University of Windsor.
