 aspects of testimonial\nliterature as a source of history. The case study 
 under discussion\nconcerns the I’tiraf-namah (Confession Book) of Ali Akba
 r\nArmani\, an Armenian merchant who converted to Shi’i Islam at the\nend 
 of the Safavid Period in Iran (1501-1722). It will be argued\nthat the rhe
 torical devices employed in this document challenge\nmost mainstream ideas
  of the conversion process of religious\nminorities late in this period. T
 raditionally\, most scholars have\nportrayed the reign of Shah Sultan Husa
 yn (1694-1722) as one of\nreligious intolerance and coerced conversions\, 
 owing in large part\nto Muhammad Baqir Majlisi’s influence on the court. T
 his perception\nderives from a rather myopic reading of Majlisi´s Risalas
 \nas incontestable proof of historical facts. In contrast\, the\nI’tiraf-n
 amah hints at a more grassroots process of\nconversion\, one which was fue
 led more by popular piety than by any\npressure from religio-political aut
