 the relationship between two great\nreligions of the Middle East over 1400
  years and finds it\nengagingly complicated. Neither religion has ever had
  a single\nidentity\, and it is therefore foolish to see the relationship 
 in\nterms of ‘a clash of civilisations’. There has been a history of\nborr
 owing in both directions\, in terms of ideas and practices\,\nbetween Chri
 stianity and Islam\, and we need to explore that history\nin order to unde
 rstand and manage present difficulties.\nDiarmaid MacCulloch is a fellow o
 f St Cross College\, Oxford\, a\nFellow of the British Academy and profess
 or of the History of the\nChurch at Oxford University.\n
