 ublication\, and\ndissemination. Questions that we will address may includ
 e: Who is\nthe author? How does citation operate? How does “ownership” wor
 k?\nHow is work disseminated? Collected? What does it mean to be a\npublic
  intellectual? What new ways of being a public intellectual\nare made poss
 ible by technology? What does publishing look like\,\nand what will it loo
 k like in the future? And how do changes in\ncommunication structures effe
 ct / affect knowledge structures and\npractices?\nIn the background of thi
 s discussion\, we must keep in mind that the\ndigital architectures we bui
 ld today are laden with ideology and\nthat “technical” decisions are often
  also value judgments. As the\nacademy establishes its presence in the dig
 ital world\, the ways in\nwhich it codes its cyberspaces\, policy and desi
 gn decisions\ninvolved in establishing digital book collections\, building
  virtual\ntools\, publishing and distributing works\, interfacing with the
 \nnon-academic public(s)\, and dealing with corporate entities will be\nba
 ttlegrounds for competing interests and ideologies.\n
