DESCRIPTION:Abstract\n\n\n\nThis talk investigates the intersecting histori
 es of slavery\,\nemancipation\, colonialism and articulations of 'family' 
 in Algeria\nin the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries. Until\nr
 ecently\, most studies dealing with slavery and its demise in the\nMaghreb
  have tended to focus on emancipation and public law\nmeasures\, thus priv
 ileging the concerns of local and colonial male\nauthorities. The speaker 
 takes a different approach\, following the\nlead of gender historians of t
 he Middle East and North Africa who\nhave contextualized the ends of slave
 ry as a critical juncture in\nwomen's history.\nThe main premise of the ar
 gument is that the gendered and\nsexualized nature of women's bondage in t
 he Algerian interior\ndefied French concepts surrounding slavery and 'free
 dom.' The women\nand girls trafficked from sub-Saharan Africa often perfor
 med both\nmenial and sexual labour\, thus placing many of these women in t
 he\nunstable category of 'concubine.' This category was unstable for\nnume
 rous reasons\, including upheavals within the very household\nstructures t
 o which bonded women were attached\, as well as the\nunintelligibility of 
 feminine servitude to French observers. This\nis shown through cases where
  women and girls fled masters who\nclaimed to be their husbands\, as well 
 as incidents of women gaining\nmanumission through divorce\, and finally -
  and perhaps most\ntellingly - in cases involving slave-women's children.
 \nThroughout these episodes\, male authorities mobilized idioms of\n'famil
 y' to privatize women's exploitation\, even as slaves-women's\nactions cha
 llenged these representations. The analysis offered here\nis mainly enable
 d by a rich and untapped archive: diaries and\nphotographs left by a promi
 nent abolitionist missionary sect known\nas the White Fathers and White Si
 sters\, whose records are populated\nby the slave and ex-slave women who p
 assed through their station\nseeking refuge and assistance.\nAbout the Spe
