 lke (Univeristy of Ottawa)\nIn this talk I illustrate the emergence of pho
 nological patterns\non a micro scale\, through individual variation in the
  distribution\nof categorically different tongue postures for /r/ in North
 \nAmerican English and rhotic vowels in Canadian French. \nSecond\, I will
  show how the typology of speaker-level /r/ allophony\npatterns is phoneti
 cally constrained and how it parallels the\ntypology of language-level /l/
  allophony patterns.  I will\nconclude by showing how some other typologic
 al observations (e.g.\ndistinctive feature effects and crosslinguistic pho
 neme\nfrequencies) can be accounted for through the role of phonetics in\n
 the emergence of sound patterns.\n
