  den\nHeuvel.\n \nABSTRACT\nThe topic of climate induced displacement appe
 ared quite\nrecently in the international scientific research as in the me
 dia.\nAlthough very new\, it is usually pointed as very urgent.\nIf the pr
 ojections of the UN come true\, Dhaka will be the fourth\nlargest megacity
  in the world by 2025. It would even be the fastest\ngrowing city\, with o
 ne of the highest slum prevalence. Therefore\,\nmany reports highlight the
  risks of such a rapid growth and the\nvulnerability of the slum dwellers\
 , in the international press as\nwell as in the local press. In the space 
 of a few years\, Dhaka has\nbecome the symbol of the urban growth linked t
 o climate change and\nother risks.\nAt another level several predictions h
 ave been made with regards\nto the number of people displaced for climatic
  reasons. In 1995\,\nNorman Myers argued that sea-level rise together with
  increase of\ninland floods (from melting Himalayan glaciers) would result
  in 15\nmillion of environmentally displaced for Bangladesh. The latter\nw
 ould review his estimate in 2001 this time stating that the number\nof peo
 ple at risk in Bangladesh by 2050 could amount to 26\nmillions. However\, 
 as highlighted in the recent report\nAssessing the Evidence: Environment\,
  Climate Change and\nMigration in Bangladesh by IOM\; “Some existing-\nand
  widely cited – figures vary by as much as a factor of 40(...)\nand in rea
 lity none of them have a sound basis in empirical\ndata”.\nThe Government 
 of Bangladesh has been gradually\, over the last\ndecade\, active in devel
 oping the capacities of the country toward\nClimate Change. However\, clim
 ate induced migrants are not yet\nviewed as part of a specific category wi
 th particular needs in\nregards to the local/national legal frameworks.\nL
 ack of empirical data\, evidence based policy recommendations\nimpact the 
 way climate induced migration is addressed currently in\nBangladesh. Howev
 er the main challenge while reflecting on this\nissue lies on the low unde
 rstanding of the dynamic between\nenvironment and social – economical fact
 ors and on what could be\nthe climate induced migration patterns in a cont
 ext of high\nexposure to disaster\, environmental degradation and poverty
 \n(officially 50 million people still live in poverty).  Based\non literat
 ure review\, one empirical research completed and two-\nongoing research p
 rojects\, the proposed presentation aims\nat:\n- Presenting a Categorizati
 on of Climate Induced Migrant in\nBangladesh\n- Replacing the Internal Mig
 ration in Bangladesh within the\nphenomenon of international labor migrati
 on\n- Framing remittance mechanisms as an Climate Change Adaptation\nStrat
 egy\n- Analyzing Interventions and how Climate Induced Migrant are\ninclud
 ed into poverty alleviation programs\n- Evaluating the impacts of Micro- F
 inance Institutions on the\nresilience and capacity of Adaptation of the C
 limate Induced\nMigrant\n \nABOUT THE SPEAKER\nDr. Rathana peou van den He
 uvel is an Associate Professor at the\nUniversity of Liberal Arts Banglade
 sh (ULAB) and a member of the\nULAB Academic Council.  She is also the Dep
 uty Director of the\nInstitute for Sustainable Development (ISD) where she
  leads\nresearch programmes on different issues related to human\ntraffick
 ing and sex workers in Bangladesh\, issues related to\nclimate induced mig
 ration\, impacts of active learning\, and\ncharacteristics of social busin
 ess.  She is also currently an\nIndependent Assessment Panel (IAP) member 
 for SHIREE (funded by\nDFID)\, responsible for screening and assessing app
 lications by NGOs\nto fund and for recommending successful proposals.\nPri
 or to joining ULAB-ISD in 2009\, Rathana worked as an\ninternational consu
 ltant and humanitarian workers in Sudan\, Kenya\,\nPakistan and Bangladesh
 .  She spent over two years in Darfur\nas an education\, and evaluation ma
 nager building programme\nframework of activities and matrix of impact mon
 itoring.\nShe has worked with and consulted for agencies such as DFID\,\nU
 SAID\, ECHO\, DIPECHO\, AFD\, EU and different INGOs and NGOs. She\nalso r
 an different training programmes related to report and\ndocumentation skil
 ls and strategic position papers.\nShe holds a PhD in Political Science ma
 joring in Philosophy and\na minor in Arabic and a Masters degree in Politi
 cal Science. Dr.\nRathana’s research interests lies in the “4 inviolate pr
 inciples”:\nfood security\, water security\, energy security and social “h
 ealth”\nsecurity. These principles are dynamic in different context from\n
 emergency situation to development.\n \n
