DESCRIPTION:This talk examines the linguistic and social correlates of the
 \nsociolinguistic factor of ethnicity in the Montreal French speech\ncommu
 nity. While numerous sociolinguistic studies over the last\nfour decades h
 ave described the structure of the French of speakers\nof traditional “Qué
 bécois” ethnicity\, little work has focused on\nthe participation of other
  segments of the population in the\nvariation present in Montreal French. 
 Only recently has some\nresearch examined the the behavior of Anglo-Montre
 alers (cf.\nBlondeau et al. 2002\; Blondeau 2008) and Spanish-speaking\nMo
 ntrealers (Friesner 2009a\,b).\n \nThis paper presents results of three st
 udies focusing on\nspeakers of various ethnic origins\, and in particular 
 on Spanish-\nand English-speakers\, in an effort to define the individual 
 factors\nthat influence speakers’ associations with various ethnic groups\
 ,\nas well as the perceptibility of these associations. In the first\nstud
 y\, described in Friesner (2009a)\, the realization of gutturals\n(/h/) in
  loanwords by Francophones and Hispanophones was examined.\nIn the second\
 , a perception-based study was conducted using sound\nsamples of speakers 
 of various ethnic origins (Friesner and\nBlondeau 2010\; Blondeau and Frie
 sner\, to appear). In the third\,\nrepresenting ongoing work\, speakers of
  Spanish-speaking origin have\nbeen examined in more detail\, in order to 
 determine the localness\nof their accent in French\, as well as the degree
  to which they\nassociate themselves with other ethnic groups\, notably An
 glophones\nand North Africans. Throughout\, speakers’ linguistic behavior 
 is\ncompared to their life trajectories to investigate the explanatory\nfo
 rce of individual factors. Together\, these studies provide\ninsight into 
 the social factor of ethnicity as it applies to\nlanguages other than Engl
 ish\, and point to the need for additional\nvariationist work on ethnicity
  in the French Canadian context.\n
