 hapel Hill\n \nLibraries have long served to collect\, share\, and preserv
 e the\nknowledge artifacts of humanity.  Digital electronic\nrepresentatio
 n of knowledge has strongly augmented physical\nartifacts and led to the c
 reation of digital libraries.  Most\nlarge libraries have both physical an
 d digital components and the\nstate of these hybrid as well as purely digi
 tal libraries continues\nto evolve.\nThis talk introduces another kind of 
 fundamental augmentation to\nlibraries as we know them: libraries of peopl
 e. Individuals have\nalways collected artifacts pertinent to their private
  lives and\nadvances in digital electronics have led to substantial person
 al\ncollections of music\, photographs\, videos\, and texts that are in\ne
 ssence personal digital libraries.\nInformation educators and librarians h
 ave a responsibility to\nhelp individuals manage their personal digital li
 braries and they\nare beginning to actively embrace this responsibility.\n
 The fact that many of our personal artifacts include\nrepresentations of o
 r from others\, together with the underlying\ninfrastructure of the Intern
 et that scales connectivity have\ncombined to introduce a completely new c
 hallenge to the traditional\nclear boundaries between public and private d
 igital libraries.\nFour kinds of personal information are defined that com
 prise\nwhat I call 'proflections of self'.  These proflections are\npublic
  representations of individual identities and challenge\ndigital libraries
  to balance the needs of individuals with the\nshared needs of communities
 .\nIn essence\, digital libraries will increasingly become\ncollectors of 
 or consultants to our digital lives.\n
