DESCRIPTION:Many large digital collections are currently organized by\nsubj
 ect\; however\, these useful information organization structures\nare larg
 e and complex\, making them difficult to browse. Current\nonline tools and
  visualization prototypes show small localized\nsubsets and do not provide
  the ability to explore the predominant\npatterns of the overall subject s
 tructure. This research addresses\nthis issue by simplifying the subject s
 tructure using two\ntechniques based on the highly uneven distribution of 
 real-world\ncollections: level compression and child pruning. The approach
  is\ndemonstrated using a sample of 233K records organized using Medical\n
 Subject Headings (MeSH). Promising results show that the subject\nhierarch
 y can be reduced down to 30% of its initial size\, while\nmaintaining acce
 ss to over 90% of the collection. The visual impact\nis demonstrated using
  a traditional outline view allowing searchers\nto dynamically change the 
 amount of complexity that they feel\nnecessary for the tasks at hand.\n\nC
 harles-Antoine Julien is an industrial engineer with professional\nexperie
 nce as a business information systems programmer\, analyst\nand trainer. A
 fter completing an engineering Masters in educative\ntechnologies\, he com
 pleted a PhD in information studies\nspecializing in information visualiza
 tion of information\norganization structures. Dr. Julien was a post-doctor
 al fellow at\nthe School of Information Studies of the University of Wisco
 nsin in\nMilwaukee where he further developed his research on the\nsimplif
 ication of information organization structures. He has\npublished on infor
 mation visualization and simplification of\ninformation organization struc
 tures\, next-generation library\ncatalogues\, and human-computer interacti
 on. Since January 2012\, he\nis an assistant professor at the 91Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ Unive
 rsity School of\nInformation Studies.\n
