 alde.\nAbstract\nOver the 2000s\, a number of factors importantly impacted
  the\ncircumstances of Peruvians\, Paraguayans and Bolivians in Argentina.
 \nIn the context of deepening regional integration (MERCOSUR)\, the\ngover
 nment adopted a new migration law in December 2003 that grants\nthese migr
 ants (as nationals of the bloc) equal rights to\nArgentinians. Moreover\, 
 thanks to an active policy of “recovery of\nsocial rights”\, these migrant
 s (along with other disadvantaged\nsocial groups) not only accessed a wide
  range of public services\nand goods but were also granted equal protectio
 n by the state. On\nthe other hand\, the economic consolidation of Chinese
  shop owners\nalong with the recent arrivals of African asylum seekers hav
 e both\ncontributed to reposition (higher) Peruvians\, Bolivians and\nPara
 guayans in the “ethnic hierarchies of value” of cities such as\nBuenos Air
 es and La Plata.\nDrawing on recent fieldwork conducted in La Plata distri
 ct and\non the analysis of local\, national and regional strategies deploy
 ed\nby the government over the 2000s\, my talk examines the impact of\nthe
  above mentioned processes on the circumstances of Peruvians\,\nBolivians 
 and Paraguayans living in urban\, suburban and rural areas\nof the distric
 t. What are the central factors mediating between\nmigrants’ legal\, forma
 l “equality” and their actual access to\neconomic\, social and political r
 ights?\nAbout the speaker.\nAranzazu Recalde is currently writing her doct
 oral dissertation\nat the Anthropology Department of the UdeM\, after havi
 ng completed\nan MA in Anthropology at 91˿����Ƶ and two other degrees in Soc
 ial\nPolicy (at FLACSO) and in Anthropology (at UNLP) in Argentina.\nAranz
 a’s commitment to the study of migrations dates back to 1995\nwhen she beg
 an to examine identity and integration issues among\nJapanese descendants 
 in La Plata city\, Argentina. Progressively\,\nAranza’s research interests
  have focused on the impact of regional\nintegration initiatives on the gr
 anting and enforcement of\nmigrants’ rights\, issues that she has examined
  among South American\nmigrants in Argentina under the MERCOSUR. Aranza’s 
 has extensively\ntaught (in Argentina\, Vancouver and Montreal) and worked
  for the\nArgentinean (CFI) and Canadian (CIC) Federal Governments as well
  as\nin NGOS serving migrants and refugees (La Plata and Vancouver).\nAran
 za is at present more closely examining the “gendering” of\nmigrant rights
  and the role played by women in transnational social\narrangements.\n
