Turkey) in 2005\, and the more\nrecent one concerned the placement of a crucifix in public schools\nin Italy (Lautsi v. Italy) in 2011.\nBoth ju dgments have created a huge public debate among opponents\nand proponents of the judicial outcomes. This issue opens up the\nwider debate over the e xtent to which European courts should be\nable to impose human rights law on individual states especially\nwhen the issue is related to religion.\nT he presentation will compares the judicial reasoning of the two\njudgments \, as well as discuss their overall socio-political\nimpacts. It will also address the difficult question of a\nsupranational court's role in an era of emerging sensitivity over\nreligious symbols\, multiculturalism\, and the ongoing debate about\nthe interplay of secularism and religiosity.\nPr esented by the Centre for Human Rights & Legal Pluralism\nand by the Human Rights Working Group.\n \n DTSTART:20111116T173000Z DTEND:20111116T190000Z LOCATION:Chancellor Day Hall\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3A 1W9\, 3644 rue Peel SUMMARY:Adjudicating Freedom of Religion and Secularism: The ECHR’s New Hea dache URL:/channels/event/adjudicating-freedom-religion-and- secularism-echr%E2%80%99s-new-headache-186792 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
