DESCRIPTION:Dr. Chris Barker (NYU) will give a talk entitled: 'Deriving som
 e\nreconstruction effects in a directly compositional semantics'.\nReconst
 ruction effects in relative clauses\, including licensing\nof idioms ('the
  headway that we made')\, of reflexives ('the picture\nof himself John lik
 ed best')\, and of bound pronouns ('the relative\nof hers that every woman
  loves') provide well-known arguments in\nfavor of a head-movement account
  for relative clauses (e.g.\,\nVergnaud 1974\,Kayne 1994\, etc.).\nJacobso
 n 1998\, 2003 argues that given a well-regulated\nsyntax/semantics---in pa
 rticular\, one that obeys direct\ncompositionality---at least some reconst
 ruction effects fall out\nwithout positing syntactic movement. Building on
  her insights\, I\ndevelop a variable-free\, directly compositional system
  that\naddresses wh-fronting\, relative clause formation\, reflexives\, an
 d\nquantificational binding\, with special attention to weak crossover.\nR
 econstruction effects are especially interesting for understanding\nweak c
 rossover\, since reconstruction examples provide systematic\ncases in whic
 h a quantificational expression follows a pronoun that\nit binds ('the rel
 ative of his that everyone loves the most'). This\nshows that weak crossov
 er can't be a merely linear constraint.\nFor technical background\, the an
