DESCRIPTION:While post-authoritarian Chile is often depicted as a\ndepoliti
 cized society\, for the last few months thousands of Chilean\nuniversity s
 tudents have been engaging in regular\, mass\nprotests.  They are denounci
 ng the neoliberal model inherited\nfrom Pinochet’s dictatorship and demand
 ing free\nhigh quality education so that middle and working class\nfamilie
 s can send their children to the university without\nsuffering huge debts.
   Moreover\, the students have been\nextending their demands beyond the do
 main of education and have\nreceived the support of the labor movement.  W
 hile this mass\nmobilization of the Chilean middle class is surprising in 
 itself\,\nit also seems to be opening cracks in the predominant institutio
 nal\nstrategies that the Chilean left has been pursuing since the return\n
 of democracy in 1990.  Now that it is in the opposition for\nthe first tim
 e in twenty years\, the Chilean left may be gradually\nelaborating strateg
 ies that are not strictly conditioned by the\nlegacies of Pinochet’s dicta
 torship.  This panel will look at\nthese protests from different angles an
 d relate them to other\,\nongoing protests.\n
