 he\nEnvironment)\nOf the nearly 600 species and subspecies of primates liv
 ing\ntoday\, approximately half are in danger of going extinct.  In\nfact\
 , one subspecies in West Africa\, Miss Waldron's red colobus\, is\nlikely 
 extinct.  Furthermore\, the number of recognized threats\nto primate survi
 val has increased dramatically over the last\ndecade.  A decade ago\, dise
 ase was not considered a factor\nthat could threaten primate populations w
 ith extinction\, while\ntoday there are a number of cases of dramatic prim
 ate population\ndeclines caused by disease and it is considered a vital fa
 ctor in\nconservation planning.  Similarly\, in the last decade climate\nc
 hange has gone from something largely ignored by many countries to\na phen
 omenon of grave concern.  I will present the current\nthreats to primate p
 opulations\, consider how perceptions of these\nthreats have changed\, and
  consider if the situation is hopelessly\ngrave (the cup half empty) or is
  there are reasons for optimism\n(the cup is half full).\nPHOTO shows the

 s in the\nendangered Red colobus monkey from East and West Africa.\n \n
