 r. Polk specializes in endurance activity\nand brain size in human evoluti
 on. He says that humans developed\ntheir endurance running ability because
  hunting required it. For\ninstance\, the human ancestor\, Australopithecu
 s\, had\nshorter limbs and may have used more flexed lower-limb postures\n
 when they walked. 'They didn't have the anatomy to run long\ndistances\, b
 ut they were not ecologically required to do so\,' Polk\nsays. 'They proba
 bly didn't walk exactly like us either\, and it is\nquite possible that th
 ere is more than one way to be an upright\nbiped. The australopithecines l
 ived in forests\, and meat wasn't a\nbig portion of their diet\, so endura
 nce running was not required in\ntracking down prey.' Dr. Polk will explai
