DESCRIPTION:Arctic regions are experiencing high degrees of environmental\n
 change\, including thinning of sea ice\, increased deposition of\nairborne
  pollutants\, as well as evidence of a longer growing\nseason. In order to
  assess the present rate and effect of these\nchanges to the terrestrial s
 ystem\, Professor Douglas and colleagues\nexamine lake sediments (paleolim
 nology) to reconstruct past natural\nbaseline conditions.\nTheir investiga
 tions of aquatic ecosystems reveal that these\nsystems are undergoing impo
 rtant changes in their physical\,\nchemical and biological characteristics
 . Understanding these\nchanges provides insight into what future arctic co
 nditions may\nprevail. The  speaker uses examples from her research on lak
 es\nand ponds in the Canadian High Arctic to show some of the practical\na
 pplications of paleolimnology in studying regional climate change\,\narcha
 eology\, and airborne pollutants.\n \n
