 ntroversial career\, Gore Vidal has been a\nprominent figure of interest t
 o the American and international\nmedia as well as a keen and critical obs
 erver of the media.\nHighlighting this experience\, Media@91˿����Ƶ is proud 
 to partner with\nthe Blue Metropolis International Festival to present the
  2011\nMedia@91˿����Ƶ Beaverbrook Annual Lecture\, entitled “Questioning Gor
 e\nVidal: On the Media.”\n\nBiography:\n\nGore Vidal has been a part of so
 me of the most important literary\nand intellectual movements of the 20th 
 century. From his early\nnovel The City and the Pillar (1948) which dealt 
 frankly\nwith homosexuality\, to his Narratives of Empire series –\nwhich 
 included historical novels that explored the national myths\nsurrounding s
 ome of the US’s most iconoclastic symbols\, figures\nlike Abraham Lincoln\
 , Aaron Burr and ideas like Hollywood – Gore\nVidal has been a professiona
 l challenger of the American\nmythological view of itself. His plays (The 
 Best Man) have\nbeen performed on Broadway\, his screenplays (Ben Hur) hav
 e\nbeen made into blockbuster films and he even ran for Congress (in\n1960
 ). Gore Vidal has also been a prolific and provocative writer\nof critical
  essays and memoirs\, and these perhaps most of all have\nensured his plac
 e in the canon of leading intellectuals of the 20th\ncentury. Well into hi
 s eighties\, Vidal continues to challenge\nassumptions surrounding America
 n military and economic power and\ncalls on the American people (when not 
 openly hostile towards them)\nto move beyond their provincial tendencies a
 nd preferences to\nnavel-gaze. His 2002 book\, Perpetual War for Perpetual
  Peace or\nHow We Came To Be So Hated\, written in the shadow of 9/11\, wa
 s\nhis attempt to come to terms with how US foreign policy contributed\n(a
 nd continues to contribute) to the view of America and Americans\naround t
 he world. Vidal’s latest work is the self-titled historical\nbook\, Gore V
 idal: Snapshots in History’s Glare\, and this\nfascinating memento offers 
 a visual journey through the artefacts\nof his very 20th century life: pho
 tos of his childhood\, letters\nfrom movie stars\, telegrams from other wr
 iters\, and notes written\nfrom public figures like the Kennedys and Elean
 or Roosevelt.\n\n“Questioning Gore Vidal: On the Media” will be animated b
 y\nMedia@91˿����Ƶ’s Marc Raboy\, Beaverbrook Chair in Ethics\, Media and\nCo
 mmunications.\n
