Busby. Dr. Richard Virr\, chief curator of the 91Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ Library's\nRare Bo oks and Special Collections\, will discuss the library's\nGlassco papers. The lecture coincides with the release of Brian\nBusby's new book: A Gentl eman of Pleasure: One Life of John\nGlassco\, Poet\, Memoirist\, Translato r\, and Pornographer. A book\nsigning will follow.\nJohn Glassco (1909-198 1) holds a unique\nposition in Canadian letters and a somewhat notorious r eputation\nthroughout the world. He is best known for his Memoirs of\nMont parnasse\, the controversial chronicle of his youthful\nadventures and enc ounters with celebrities in the Paris of James\nJoyce\, Gertrude Stein\, a nd Ernest Hemingway. Less known are his\npoetry\, his instrumental role in the foundation of modern\ntranslation\, and his numerous - and widely pop ular - works of\npornography. A Gentleman of Pleasure not only spans Glass co's life\nbut delves into his background as a member of a once prominent and\npowerful Montreal family. In addition to Glassco's readily\navailable work\, Brian Busby draws on pseudonymous writings\npublished as a 91Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ student as well as unpublished and previously\nunknown poems\, letters\, a nd journal entries to detail a vibrant\nlife while pulling back the curtai n on Glassco's sexuality and\nunconventional tastes. In a lively account o f a man given to\ndeception\, who took delight in hoaxes\, Busby manages t o\nsubstantiate many of the often unreliable statements Glassco made\nabou t his life and work.\nA Gentleman of Pleasure is a remarkable biography th at\ncaptures the knowable truth about a fascinatingly complex and\nsecreti ve man. Brian Busby is an independent scholar and the author\nof several b ooks\, including Character Parts: Who's Really Who\nin CanLit.\nURL:  http ://www.alumni.mcgill.ca/event/?id=NzY5MQ%3D%3D\n DTSTART:20110407T220000Z DTEND:20110408T000000Z SUMMARY:Public Lecture by Brian Busby on Montreal author John Glassco URL:/channels/event/public-lecture-brian-busby-montrea l-author-john-glassco-173062 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
