 l\, the audience’s tense expression at the\nclimactic moment of the film\,
  the dancer’s body held in its\ngraceful pose. But what of the musician? H
 is art form not only\nceases to exist but cannot even be represented witho
 ut the\ncontinuum of time. Since the introduction of recorded sound\, this
 \nnatural relationship between sound and time has become grossly\ndistorte
 d and has resulted in an ongoing debate between\nphilosophers\, scientists
 \, and artists as to the true nature of\nsound. But in focusing on this te
 mporal foundation\, most arguments\ncompletely ignore the importance of th
 e spatial dimensions in\nsound: whether referring to the physical space\, 
 a wider geographic\nlocation\, or cultural environment in which a sound is
  created or\nreproduced. In this session\, we will compare a few artists r
 ecorded\nperformances of Beethoven’s Emperor Concerto (Concerto no.5)\,\nd
 iscussing how their spatial and temporal qualities are uniquely\nintertwin
 ed and codependent.\n
