 r of English\, French\,\nAmerican Studies\, and Jewish Studies at Vanderbi
 lt University. He\nis the author of Noam Chomsky: A Life of Dissent (1997\
 ,\n1998)\, The Chomsky Effect: A Radical Works Beyond the Ivory\nTower (20
 07\, 2009)\, and\, new this week\, Zellig Harris:\nFrom American Linguisti
 cs to Socialist Zionism\, all three\npublished by the MIT Press. His other
  books include\nConstructing a Productive Other (John Benjamins 1994)\;\nI
 ntroduction à la théorie littéraire (PUQ 1997) and\nArguing and Justifying
  (Ashgate 2001).\n\nThis paper will discuss what we learn about the proble
 m of\n“otherness” from translating or publishing “obscene” literary\ntexts
 \, and then apply the insights to the case of welcoming\nimmigrant “others
 ” into new host countries. In both cases at issue\nis to introduce the “fo
 reign”\, be it obscene or somehow\n“non-indigenous\,” and in so doing we a
 re asking for the integration\nof something that stands outside accepted n
 orms and codes of\nrepresentation. In cases of foreigners and cultural pro
 ductions\n“other” to the norm\, we are dealing with ideas or people that '
 out\nof place' within the dominant discursive systems\, and so both are\nc
 an or must be relegated to marginal social and aesthetic spaces.\nThe lite
 rary example will be the obscenity trial launched against\nHenry Vizetelly
  for his publication of Zola’s La terre\, and the\nreal-world corollary is
  the contemporary treatment of “illegals” in\nthe United States.\n \n
