 to have a\ngenetic urge to see around the corner\, to sense what’s coming 
 next.\nThe ancient Greeks built sophisticated models of the cosmos\, based
 \non the ideal of perfect circles\, that could be used by astrologers.\nTo
 day we rely on mathematical models to forecast the weather\, the\nspread o
 f diseases\, the economy\, and much else. Nowhere is\npredictive ability m
 ore important than in science\, where it is\nconsidered the traditional te
 st of a theory’s success.\nThis talk takes an overview of the history and 
 the challenges of\nprediction\, from the oracle at Delphi\, right up to th
 e latest\nmethods being developed in areas such as systems biology and\nec
 onomics — and argues that our search for the “perfect model”\noften reveal
 s as much about our sense of aesthetics as it does\nabout the future. Davi
