A\nv ariational model for this phenomenon is proposed. The underlying\nenergy f unctional includes bending and membranal contributions.\nMotivated by work of Cerda\, Ravi-Chandar\, and Mahadevan\, the\nfunctional is minimized su bject to a global constraint on the area\nof the mid-surface of the sheet. Analysis of a boundary-value\nproblem for the ensuing EulerLagrange equat ion shows that wrinkled\nsolutions exist only above a threshold of the app lied stretch. A\nsequence of critical values of the applied stretch\, each element of\nwhich corresponds to a discrete number of wrinkles\, is deter mined.\nWhenever the applied stretch is sufficiently large to induce more \nthan one wrinkle\, previously proposed scaling relations for the\nwrinkl e wavelength and amplitude are confirmed.
