DESCRIPTION:The structure of clauses and noun phrases show striking\nsimila
 rities\, as we know from Lees 1963 and much subsequent work. I\nexplore wh
 ether v--a verbal functional head that introduces the\nexternal argument--
 has a nominal counterpart by looking at two\ndeverbal nominalizers in Nort
 hern Paiute\, a Uto-Aztecan language of\nthe western United States. These 
 nominalizers\, -dü and -na\, show an\nunusual asymmetry. Nominalizations c
 reated with -dü describe\nsubject event participants\, while those created
  with -na describe\nnonsubject event participants. I propose that both nom
 inalizers are\novert realizations of n--a nominal functional head\, locate
 d between\nD and N\, that introduces the possessor. My account derives the
 \ncomplementary functions of the two Northern Paiute nominalizers\,\nand i
 t correctly predicts that they also create certain types of\nevent-denotin
 g nominalizations.\n
