RSVP:\nemily .elder [at] mail.mcgill.ca\nby 12 noon on Tuesday\, Jan. 25.\nBiography\nE lection to the Chair\nMr. Milliken was first elected Speaker of the House of Commons\non January 29th\, 2001\, and was re-elected in 2004\, 2006\, a nd most\nrecently on November 18th\, 2008.  He is the third Speaker in\nhi story to be chosen by a secret ballot cast by his fellow Members\nof the H ouse of Commons. On October 12\, 2009\, he became the\nlongest-serving Spe aker in Canadian history.\nPolitical Record\nMr. Milliken was first electe d to the House of Commons in 1988\nas the Liberal Member of Parliament for Kingston and the Islands\nand was re-elected in 1993\, 1997\, 2000\, 2004 \, 2006 and 2008. \nHe held several positions including\, in opposition\, Party Critic\nfor Election Reform and Associate Critic for Seniors\, Assis tant\nParty House Leader (House Business)\, Vice-Chairman of the Special\n Committee on Electoral Reform and Member of the Standing Committee\non Hou se Management. In government\, Mr. Milliken served as\nParliamentary Secre tary to the Government House Leader\, Chairman of\nthe Standing Committee on Procedure and House Affairs and Co-Chair\nof the Special Joint Committe e on a Code of Conduct. In 1996\, he\nwas named Deputy Chairman of Committ ees of the Whole House. In\n1997\, Mr. Milliken was appointed Deputy Speak er of the House and\nChairman of the Committees of the Whole House. In 200 1\, he was\nelected 34th Speaker of the House of Commons\, and in 2004 he was\nre-elected by acclamation.
