DESCRIPTION:A classic puzzle about CPs is that they distribute differently
 \nthan nominal arguments.  This fact is reflected\, among other\nthings\, 
 by the order of complements in English (Stowell 1981) and\nthe right-perip
 heral position of CPs in many OV languages\n(Hindi\,Farsi\, German). This 
 distribution has traditionally been\nseen as a reflex of grammatical funct
 ion\, most famously encoded by\nStowell's case resistance principle (or mo
 dern variants\, Pesetsky\nand Torrego 2004).\nIn this talk I argue that th
 e syntactic distribution of clausal\narguments has its source in the seman
 tic type of CPs. I begin by\nestablishing a puzzle: that clause-taking pre
 dicates only form\nnon-event nominals. I argue that the explanation for th
 is puzzle\nrequires that CPs are \emph{never} able to saturate an argument
 \nposition (cf. Grimshaw 1990). This also prevents CPs from combining\nas 
 the internal argument of verbs. The only solution\, I claim\, is\nto turn 
 the vP into a relative clause (deriving the right NP\nmeaning) to which th
 e `complement CP' can combine. We then show how\nthis motivates a vP raisi
 ng analysis of the rightward position of\nCPs (Larson 1988a\,b) as opposed
  to an antisymmetry analysis (Zwart\n1993).\n
