  German literary\nrepresentations of\, references to\, and reflections on 
 the\ntransgenerational memory and trauma of the Holocaust. Fictional\nwork
 s by best-selling writers of the so-called second generation\n(born around
  1940\, i.e. Bernhard Schlink and Peter Schneider) as\nwell as works by im
 portant younger writers (Susanne Riedel\, b.\n1951\, Thomas Hettche\, b. 1
 967\, and Julia Franck\, b. 1970)\narticulate stereotypical\, antisemitic\
 , anti-American\, and sexist\nrhetoric.\nPresumably\, these works seek to 
 answer questions of ethics and\naesthetics of representation\, popularizat
 ion\, and Americanization\nof the Holocaust. Yet\, the texts appear to con
 sider themselves no\nlonger indebted to such issues of morality\, and oper
 ate beyond\npreviously perceived “taboos” of performative articulation\, i
 nstead\ndisplaying long-standing gender and race stereotypes. This raises
 \nimportant and unsettling questions. Is the antisemitism and sexism\nthat
  is so clearly emergent in today’s best-selling German\nliterature no long
 er considered “taboo”? Are textual\nrepresentations of gender and race ste
 reotyping a reference to\nsimilar issues found in everyday life? Do works 
 by these writers\,\nthen\, have the effect of enabling readers to work thr
 ough those\nvery issues with the ultimate goal of eliminating them\, or do
 es\nsuch fiction rather function to confirm the troubling gender and\nanti
 semitic stereotyping even further?\n
