DESCRIPTION:A presentation by Dr. Marianne Douglas (Director\,\nCanadian Ci
 rcumpolar Institute and Professor\, Earth and Atmospheric\nSciences\, Univ
 ersity of Alberta)\n Arctic regions are experiencing high degrees of\nenvi
 ronmental change\, including thinning of arctic sea ice\,\nincreased depos
 ition of airborne pollutants\, as well as evidence of\na longer growing se
 ason. In order to assess the present rate and\neffect of these changes to 
 the terrestrial system\, we examine lake\nsediments (paleolimnology) to re
 construct past natural baseline\nconditions. Our investigations of aquatic
  ecosystems reveal that\nthey are undergoing important changes in their ph
 ysical\, chemical\nand biological characteristics. Understanding these cha
 nges\nprovides insight into what future arctic conditions may\nprevail.\n
 \nIn this presentation I will use examples from our research on lakes\nand
  ponds in the Canadian High Arctic to show some of the practical\napplicat
 ions of paleolimnology in studying regional climate change\,\narchaeology\
