 -week residency\, Zylinska will present a keynote talk\non Thursday\, 13 J
 anuary 2011\, at 5:30 p.m. in Arts\nW215\, 853 Sherbrooke West\, Montreal.
  This event is a\ncollaboration between Media@91Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ and the AHCS Speaker 
 Series. The\ntalk is free and open to the public.\nTitle: The Human after 
 the Post-humanist Critique or\,\nthe Fantasy of Interspecies Ethics\nThis 
 paper is an attempt to return to the human 'after the\ncyborg.' It is driv
 en by a desire to find a way out of the\nposthumanist impasse of some stra
 nds of contemporary cultural\ntheory\, whereby the widespread acceptance o
 f the notions of\ntranshuman relationality\, interspecies kinship\, and ma
 chinic\nbecoming seems to have diminished the need for a more rigorous\nin
 terrogation of the singularity of trans-species and intra-species\ndiffere
 nce. Obviously\, there is also a possibility that this\ninterrogation is j
 ust another exercise in narcissism\, a desperate\nattempt to return to the
  self and hang on to the fantasy of human\nexceptionalism. In this context
 \, Jacques Derrida's query\, 'Is there\nanimal narcissism?\,' becomes some
 thing of an accusation\, aimed\nperhaps at those of us who are still obses
 sed by Descartes'\nquestion: 'But as for me\, who am I?.' Yet the focus in
  this paper\nis primarily ethical rather than ontological. Rather than aim
  at\ndetermining the identity of the human/non-human animal\, it is\npredo
 minantly concerned with discussing how the transformed\nunderstanding of t
 he human that posthumanism has bestowed upon us\ncan help us not only thin
 k better about ourselves and others who\nmay or may not be like us\, but a
 lso live better with others - with\nmachines\, humans and other animals. T
 he emphasis in this\nexploration falls on the pragmatics of the 'how' as m
 uch as on the\nnature of this 'we.'\nBio\nJoanna Zylinska is Media@91Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ'
 s Beaverbrook Visiting Scholar\nin January 2011. She is a cultural theoris
 t writing on new\ntechnologies and new media\, ethics and art. She is a Re
 ader in New\nMedia and Communications at Goldsmiths\, University of\nLondo
 n. The author of three books - \nBioethics in the Age of New Media (MIT Pr
 ess\, 2009)\, \nThe Ethics of Cultural Studies (Continuum\, 2005) and On\n
 Spiders\, Cyborgs and Being Scared: the Feminine and the Sublime\n(Manches
 ter University Press\, 2001) - she is also the editor of\n\nThe Cyborg Exp
 eriments: the Extensions of the Body in the Media\nAge\, a collection of e
 ssays on the work of performance artists\nStelarc and Orlan (Continuum\, 2
 002) and co-editor of \nImaginary Neighbors: Mediating Polish-Jewish Relat
 ions after the\nHolocaust (University of Nebraska Press\, 2007). Zylinska 
 is\ncurrently writing a new book on the idea of mediation\, Life after\nNe
 w Media (with Sarah Kember) for the MIT Press\, and working on a\ntranslat
 ion of Stanislaw Lem's major philosophical treatise\, Summa\nTechnologiae\
 , for the University of Minnesota's Electronic\nMediations series. She is 
 one of the Editors of Culture Machine\,\nan international open-access jour
 nal of culture and theory.\nZylinska combines her philosophical writings w
 ith photographic art\npractice.\n
