In the\nU.S. the hardwood species\nLiquidambar styraciflua (sweetgum) and the herbaceous species\nPanicum virgatum (switchgrass)\nare likely ca ndidates. Such feedstocks usually contain cellulose\,\nlignin and hemicell ulose. To be\neconomically competitive a biorefinery must utilize a proces s in\nwhich most of the available sugars\nare utilized\, including five ca rbon sugars like xylose that result\nfrom the depolymerization of\nhemicel lulose. In the overall process hemicellulose\ndepolymerization is critical because it impacts\noverall conversion\, and understanding it is very imp ortant. The\nproduction of valuable co-products\,\nlike shikimic acid and rutin\, respectively from sweetgum and\nswitchgrass\, will also be discuss ed.\n\nBio: Dr. Carrier has been a professor since 1996\, first at the\nUn iversity of Saskatchewan and then\,\nsince 2000\, at the University of Ark ansas (Fayetteville\, Arkansas)\nin the Department of Biological\nand Agri cultural Engineering. She was promoted to the rank of\nProfessor in 2009. She received\nher BSc in Agricultural Engineering in 1984\, her MEng in Ch emical\nEngineering in1986 and her\nPhD in Chemical Engineering in 1992\, all from 91Ë¿¹ÏÊÓÆµ\nUniversity.\n\nDr. Carrier’s research program is focused on the extraction of\ncarbohydrates and phytochemicals\nfrom biomass. She is particularly interested in forest residue and\nherbaceous energy crops\ , and in\npressurized hot water and dilute acid pretreatments. She has\nau thored more than 65 peerreviewed\npublications\, one patent\, and two book chapters.
