 eletal muscle”\n \nWe have recently described a population of fibro/adipog
 enic\nprogenitors resident in skeletal muscle and multiple other tissues.
 \nThese vessel associated cells arise from an embryonic origin\ndistinct f
 rom that of satellite cells\, respond to damage by\nentering the cell cycl
 e and quickly expand to invade the\ninterstitial spaces of the regeneratin
 g tissue. From this position\,\nthese cells exert a trophic effect on myog
 enic cells and enhance\nregeneration. In healthy regenerating muscle\, the
 se cells are\nquickly ablated and return to the initial numbers found in\n
 undamaged tissue. In muscle in which regeneration is impaired\,\nthese cel
 ls persist and eventually differentiate into both\nadipocytes and myofibro
 blasts. This complex interaction between\nmyogenic and fibro/adipogenic ce
 lls is further modulated by\ninflammatory cells and cytokines\,  suggestin
 g a model in which\ncrosstalk among multiple cell types is responsible for
  ensuring\nthat the tissue is either efficiently restored to its original
 \nfunction or\, if this is not possible\, repaired via the formation of\ns
