 luwade\nCommon Errors in Using GIS\n\nThe advancements and discoveries in 
 Geographical Information System\n(GIS)\, Spatial Database Management Syste
 m (SDBMS) and Remote\nSensing have been capitalized on in other fields suc
 h as military\nsurveillance\, animal tracking and localization\, transport
 \nmanagement\, disease modeling\, geospatial intelligence\, agriculture\,
 \neconomics\, judiciary\, etc. Being aware of the inherent errors and\nunc
 ertainties associated with spatial data will affect how spatial\ndescripti
 ons are interpreted.  In this presentation\, several\nsources of error in 
 GIS will be examined and their consequences\nexamined.\n\nBoluwade obtaine
 d his MSc (2010) in Geospatial Technologies\,\nInstitute of Geoinformatics
 \, University of Muenster\, Germany\,\nUniversity of Juame I\, Spain and U
 niversity of New Lisbon\, Portugal\nwith a scholarship from the European U
 nion. His work was focused on\nHydrologic modeling and Uncertainty Analysi
 s. Prior to this\, he had\nworked in consultancy and several educational i
 nstitutions after\nobtaining his BEng (1997-98) and MSc (2003) degrees fro
 m\, \nrespectively\, the Faculty of Engineering\, Universities of Ilorin\n
 and Ibadan\, Nigeria. Currently\, Boluwade works towards a PhD degree\nin 
 the areas of Spatial Heterogeneity and Subsurface Phosphorus\nmodeling und
 er the supervision of Prof. Madramootoo.\n\n\nItem 2: Seminar by Julie Gag
 né\nThe Absorbance Spectrum of Plant Leaves\n\nThe spectral properties of 
 plant leaves have been correlated to\nwater content\, internal structure\,
  concentration and composition of\npigments\, surface optical properties\,
  and photosynthetic\nefficiency.  The absorption spectrum of light by leav
 es is a\ntypical measure obtained in surveys of photosynthetic light use\n
 efficiency in plants. It tells us what fraction of light leaves\nwill abso
 rb for use in photosynthesis at each frequency. We are\naiming to redefine
  the PAR curve for higher light intensities of\nnarrow waveband light. Thi
 s presentation will look at the why\, how\,\nand what of plant leaf absorb
 ance spectral data.\n\nMontreal born and raised\, Julie Gagné obtained her
  BSc (AgEnvSc) in\nMicrobiology at Mac before working on an agricultural s
 oil\nmicrobiology research project in Sorel\, QC\, for a few years. Next\,
 \nshe worked for Genome Quebec for two years and then returned to\nacademi
 a to re-focus her career on environmental topics. Julie is\nworking on her
  MSc under the supervision of Dr. Mark Lefsrud.\n\n\nItem 3: Seminar by Pa
 vithra Sellaperumal\nA Shortcut to Death – Smoking\n\nEvery year hundreds 
 of thousands of people around the world die\nfrom diseases caused by smoki
 ng tobacco. One in two lifetime\nsmokers will die from their habit. Half o
 f these deaths will occur\nin middle age. Tobacco smoke contributes to a n
 umber of cancers and\nsmoking can cause heart attacks and stroke. In young
 er people\,\nthree out of four deaths from heart disease are due to smokin
 g.\nSince smoking slows the blood flow\, cutting off oxygen to the hands\n
 and feet\, some smokers end up having their limbs amputated.\nAlthough mos
 t people are well aware of the facts\, they tend to\nignore them and conti
 nue to indulge in their habit. Bringing\nawareness to youngsters is the ne
 ed of the hour.\n\nPavithra comes from India where she completed her Bache
 lor of\nTechnology in Biotechnology at Anna University\, Chennai. Pavithra
 \nrecently the research team of Professor Raghavan.\n\n\nItem 4: Seminar b
 y Yamuna Sampathkumar\nGateway to the Diverse Flavours of India\n\nIndian 
 cuisine is one of the most popular across the globe because\nfood is an im
 portant part of Indian culture.The cuisine can be\nsplit into five main ca
 tegories: Northern\, Southern\, Eastern\,\nWestern and North-eastern. This
  presentation will attempt to\ndescribe the general ideas behind Indian Cu
 isine\, especially that\nof Tamil Nadu. The focus will be the food culture
 \, spices and the\nwide assortment of dishes available.\n\nYamuna Sampathk
 umar was born in India where she completed her\nBachelor’s of Technology d
 egree in Biotechnology at SASTRA\nUniversity. She is currently completing 
 her first year as a\nMaster’s degree student under the supervision of Dr. 
 Raghavan.\nYamuna loves to explore different types of foods and\ncuisines.
