 opriately\, the immune response is a powerful\nsystem capable of eliminati
 ng potentially dangerous infections or\nmalignancies. Effective immunity a
 gainst diverse pathogens requires\nthat responses be tailored to the type 
 of infectious agent. The\nimmune system achieves diversity\, in part\, by 
 the differential\nactivation/polarization of dendritic cells (DCs) in resp
 onse to\nvarious pathogens. Differentially polarized DCs direct the\ndiffe
 rentiation of CD4 T helper cells in to distinct lineages\,\nwhich is essen
 tial for pathogen control. Indeed\, proper\ndifferentiation of Th cells is
  essential as overactive or\nmisdirected immune responses can lead to the 
 development of chronic\ninflammatory or autoimmune disorders\, and non-pro
 ductive immune\nresponses limit the ability of the host to protect itself 
 against\npathogens and cancer. The generation and plasticity of CD4 T cell
 \nresponses in vivo and the nature by which DC polarization\ninfluences th
 ese responses will be discussed\, as well as novel\nmolecular mechanisms w
 hich regulate DC activation and function.\n
