DESCRIPTION:Over the last 15 years\, the global density and dispersion of\n
 rights-based civil society has grown exponentially. In addition to\n'class
 ic' human rights groups documenting  violations of civil\nand political ri
 ghts\, there are now hundreds of rights-based social\njustice groups worki
 ng on a wide variety of issues\, including the\nrights of slum dwellers\, 
 sex workers\, migrants\, women\, children\,\nand many more. This organizat
 ional proliferation has been prompted\,\nin part\, by the mainstreaming of
  rights-based approaches to\ndevelopment among major international agencie
 s\, including\, most\nprominently\, the United Nations and its associated 
 entities.\nHow financially sustainable are these groups\, and how embedded
 \nare they in their local contexts? What kind of response do they get\nwhe
 n using human rights language among potential clients and\nconstituents? W
 ho are their local collaborators and competitors\,\nand what role\, if any
 \, do faith-based organizations have in\nspreading the human rights messag
 e?\nJames Ron has been studying these questions\nwith the help of an innov
 ative\, multi-method interview strategy. In\nPhase I\, he and his assistan
 ts conducted 130 interviews with\nrights-based workers from 60 countries a
 s they participated in a\n3-week training session run by Equitas\, a Montr
 eal-based NGO. In\nPhase II\, Ron's assistants are conducting similar inte
 rviews with\nrights-based workers in Mexico\, India and Morocco. During th
