 \nAbstract: Though the endless speculation in\ncontemporary print journali
 sm and blogs might suggest otherwise\,\nthe dilemma of technological conve
 rgence and the problems that it\nposes for print newspapers are not new. H
 istory is rife with\nmoments when newspapers colonized or adopted nascent 
 communications\ntechnologies in the effort to remain relevant and competit
 ive\, only\nto find themselves transformed in the process. Drawing from a 
 range\nof examples from newspapers\, I will discuss what I’m calling an\ni
 ntermedial imaginary – moments when the newspaper envisioned ways\nthat it
  could hybridize with other communications technologies in\norder to exten
 d its significance as a cultural and economic entity\,\nand to re-envision
  the process of communication itself through the\nforging of affective tie
 s with its audience. What’s at stake is the\npossibility of gaining an his
 torically informed view on what a\nrecent Harper’s cover story declared th
 e “Final Edition” of\ncontemporary print newspapers.\nBiography: Sandra Ga
 briele is Assistant\nProfessor at Concordia University. She specializes in
  the study of\njournalism history and women’s journalistic practices in Ca
 nada.\nHer current project (funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities\n
 Research Council of Canada)\, with Paul S. Moore\, traces the history\nof 
 the weekend newspaper in the United States and Canada as a key\nsite of th
 e emergence of popular culture and the mass public. Their\nfirst results l
 ooked at the emergence of special weekend editions\nin Toronto: “The Globe
  on Saturday\, The World on Sunday\,” in the\nCanadian Journal of Communic
 ation (2009). Her research has appeared\nin Aether\, Journalism Studies\, 
 and Journalism: Theory\,\nPractice and Criticism.\n
