The Soil Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) was evaluated\nwith flow at the outlet of the Canagagique Creek watershed which is\nlocated in sou thwestern Ontario.\n\nGolmar is a second year Ph.D student in Bioresource Engineering.\nHer project is about the development of a hydrologic model a t the\nwatershed scale. Her supervisors are Professors Prasher and Madani \n(NSAC). She obtained her Bachelor and Master Degrees from the\nUniversit y of Tehran\, Iran. She has also worked as a GIS and water\nresource exper t for several companies\n\n\nItem 2: Seminar by Johannes Halbe\nThe Engine er’s Method and Role\n\nScience\, technology and engineering have made lif e more convenient\nfor most humans but have also resulted in some detrimen tal effects\non the environment at the same time. Engineers are expected t o play\na role in the solution of some of these environmental problems. In \nthis presentation the engineering method and the role of engineers\nin s ociety will be discussed. What are the reasons for the\nprominence of the engineering method? And\, what is the role of the\nengineer in sustainable development?\n\nJohannes Halbe is a PhD student in Bioresource Engineerin g under\nthe supervision of Prof. Jan Adamowski. He has an interdisciplina ry\nbackground\, with a BA in Economics and a Master degree in Civil\nEngi neering. He has worked as a research associate in the team of\nProf. Claud ia Pahl-Wostl at the Institute of Environmental Systems\nResearch\, the Un iversity of Osnabrueck\, Germany.\n\n\nItem 3: Seminar by Mahsa Madani-Hos seini\nBiocement\n\nOne way to reduce the carbon dioxide generated during cement\nmanufacture is to add silica-rich materials that can partially\nre place the Portland cement component. Amorphous biosilica ash\nproduced by burning biological wastes and plant residues can be\nused in this way. Mos t investigations in this apporach are focused\non the use of tropical and sub-tropical agriculture waste to\nproduce biosilica but in this presentat ion other plants that grow\nin temperate and cold-temperate climates will be discussed.\n\nMahsa completed her Master in Soil Science at Tehran Univ ersity\,\nIran. She is currently engaged in PhD-level studies on anaerobic \ndigestion\, under the supervision of Professor Barrington.\n\n\nItem 4: Seminar by Michael Schwalb\nSupplemental LED Lighting for Commercial Green houses\n\nWith new technological developments in LED lighting there exists \nthe potential to greatly increase the efficiency of supplemental\nlighti ng for controlled environment agriculture. However\, to truly\nexploit the potential of this emerging technology\, the\nphotosynthetic curve must be defined better. Accordingly\, the goal\nof my research is to refine the p hotosynthetic curve with\nmonochromatic light.\n\nMichael recently complet ed his Bachelor Degree in Bioresource\nEngineering and is now pursuing a M aster degree under the\nsupervision of Professor Lefsrud. He plans to purs ue a career in\nenvironmental engineering.\n\n\nItem 5: Seminar by Lucia S huang-Ye Qiao\nPanda Conservation in China\n\nPandas are one of the most a dored species in modern times. Their\ncuteness and cultural symbolism of p eace and friendship have made\npandas the “flagship” of conservation biolo gy.  Currently the\nconservation work on pandas in China is slowly progres sing\, but\nthere are several fundamental reasons why conservation is very \ndifficult and why pandas as a species wil have trouble surviving in\nthe modern world.  \n\nLucia was born in China and emigrated to Canada at the age of 13.\nShe has always been fascinated with every aspect of natural\n science. She completed a BSc in Environmental Science at the\nUniversity o f Ottawa and is now working on an an MSc in Bioresource\nEngineering. Ulti mately\, she hopes to make a difference in reducing\nagricultural pollutio n.
