 niversity\,  presents 'Bilingualism in infancy.'\nAbstract:\n\nInfants gro
 wing up bilingual provide a fascinating window into\nhow the human mind co
 pes with different types of early language\nenvironments.  Bilingual infan
 ts must detect the two languages\nin their input\, and adapt their learnin
 g accordingly. This talk\nwill cover three sets of studies exploring bilin
 gualism in the\nfirst two years of life.  The first set uses a high amplit
 ude\nsucking technique to investigate how prenatal bilingual exposure\naff
 ects language preference and language discrimination at\nbirth.  The secon
 d set looks at “mutual exclusivity”\, and the\nimpact of monolingualism vs
 . multilingualism on the development on\nthis word learning heuristic.  Th
 e final set introduces a new\npen-and-paper instrument for measuring langu
 age mixing by bilingual\nparents\, and provides some preliminary evidence 
 that hearing mixed\nlanguage affects infants’ vocabulary size at 18 and 24
  months.\nTogether\, these studies show how the tools that support languag
 e\nacquisition operate in monolingual and bilingual environments to\nenabl
 e language acquisition.\n
