 the embodied subject is not only\nindependent of others and wholly human\,
  but bears an identity that\nis unchanged over time. This presentation loo
 ks specifically at\nheart transplantation as an exemplary process that\, i
 n potentially\ndisturbing aspects of identity\, entails the need for organ
 \nrecipients to reconceptualise the question ‘Who am I?’ in terms of\nthe 
 posthuman. While in the authorised narrative the replacement of\na ‘failed
 ’ organ is a matter of ‘spare part surgery’ that restores\nthe originary s
 elf\, the more pressing issue is that the\npost–transplant body becomes ir
 reducibly hybrid for life: the\noriginary self is irrecoverable. As the bo
 dy makes novel\nconnections and participates in assemblages of the human\,
  animal\nand machine alike\, it demands a reimagination not only of the\ni
 deologies of human identity\, but of the bioethics that seeks to\nmediate 
 the recipient experience.\n
