 anada’s western interior has one of the world's most variable\nclimates\, 
 with severe drought and torrential rainstorms experienced\nin recent years
 . The extreme climate events in this region have\nbeen some of the most co
 stly natural disasters in Canada history.\nClimate models suggest that thi
 s hydroclimatic variability could be\namplified by global warming — presen
 ting a more challenging future\nscenario than the projected shifts in aver
 age conditions.\n\nTo appreciate how global warming might affect the varia
 ble\nhydroclimate of western Canada\, we first must understand the\nintern
 al (natural) short-term variability. Because some climate\ncycles are as l
 ong or longer than most weather station records\, we\nuse the response of 
 tree growth to climate to generate proxy\nrecords of the hydroclimate of t
 he past millennium. The long\nclimate records indicate that western water 
 policy and management\npractices were established during a period of inten
 se\, but not\nsustained drought\, and that adjustments may be required to 
 sustain\nland and water use under a hydrologic regime that has elements of
 \nprevious regimes and global warming.\nFree\, everyone welcome. Seating i
