Equality Effect's lawyers have\njoined Kenyan colleagues and politicians at their request in a\nlegal challenge t o force the Kenyan government to enforce existing\nlaws against the sexual torture of children. The project has\nbrought together 160 Kenyan rape vi ctims under the age of 18 to\nfight for protection. Essentially\, the grou p is trying for a Kenyan\nversion of what Jane Doe managed when she sued t he Toronto Police\nDepartment over rape-challenging the way rape victims a re\nsubsequently treated by police and the legal system.\nThis event is co -sponsored by the 91Ë¿¹ÏÊÓÆµ Law Women's Caucus\,\n91Ë¿¹ÏÊÓÆµ Centre for Human Rig hts and Legal Pluralism\, the Human\nRights Working Group\, and the Sexual Assault Law Seminar at\n91Ë¿¹ÏÊÓÆµ.\nRefreshments will be served.\nSpeaker bi os\nFiona Sampson - B.A.\, M.A.\, LL.B.\, Ph. D.:\nFiona Sampson is the Pr oject Director for the equality effect.\nFiona originally conceived of the equality effect in 2005\, in\ncollaboration with friends and colleagues f rom Africa at the\nOsgoode Hall Law School graduate program. Fiona has wor ked as a\nStaff Lawyer and as the Director of Litigation at the Women's Le gal\nEducation and Action Fund (LEAF). Fiona has appeared as counsel\nbefo re the Supreme Court of Canada on many occasions representing\nwomen's NGO 's in different equality rights cases. Fiona has worked\nas a legal consul tant with\, amongst others\, the Ontario Native\nCouncil on Justice\, the DisAbled Women's Network (DAWN) of Canada\,\nEducation Wife Assault\, and the Ethiopian Muslim Relief and\nDevelopment Association. Fiona has publis hed numerous articles on\nwomen's equality rights and has her Ph.D. in wom en's equality law\nfrom Osgoode Hall Law School\, York University.\nPearl Eliadis:\nPearl is a human rights lawyer who works internationally and in \nCanada on civil\, political\, economic\, social and cultural rights. A\n graduate of 91Ë¿¹ÏÊÓÆµ and Oxford Universities\, she is involved in\npressing for social justice issues at the community level\,\nincluding as past Pres ident of Equitas and of the Shield of Athena\,\na CSO working to prevent v iolence against women and children. Since\n1995\, she has been retained by the UN\, the European Union and\ninternational consortia as a senior advi sor in Ethiopia\,\nJordan/Iraq\, Nepal\, Timor Leste and Sri Lanka\, as we ll as in Rwanda\nin the aftermath of the genocide. Pearl has co-edited thr ee books\non international human rights\, public administration and public \npolicy.
