Based upon\ncourt records\, private papers and runaway advertisements in\ncolonial newspapers\, she argues th at plebeian clothing was viewed\nby defenders of the politics of the count errevolution as a\ndestabilizing force because it visibly articulated the emerging\nvalues of the free marketplace\, individual choice and\nself-fas hioning.\n \nNancy Christie is a historian who has authored\na number of p rize-winning volumes in Canadian history\, notably\n'Engendering the State : Family\, Work\, and Welfare in Canada' (2000)\nwhich won the Sir John A. Macdonald Prize for best book in Canadian\nhistory\, and 'A Full-Orbed Ch ristianity: The Protestant Churches\nand Social Welfare in Canada\, 1900-1 940' (1996)\, awarded the Harold\nAdams Innis Prize for best book in the s ocial sciences in the\nEnglish language. She has written widely on the his tory of\nreligion\, gender\, family\, and class relations in 19th and 20th \ncentury Canada. Her edited books include: 'Households of Faith:\nFamily\ , Gender and Community in Canada' (2002)\; 'Cultures of\nCitizenship in Po st-war Canada' (2003)\; 'Mapping the Margins:\nFamilies and Social Discipl ine in Canada' (2004)\; 'Transatlantic\nSubjects' (2008). Her most recent book is a social history of\nreligion in Canada\, Churches and their Peopl es (2010)\, which will\nbe published this fall by University of Toronto Pr ess. She is\ncurrently engaged in two major research projects: a two-volum e\ncultural and social history of Canada to celebrate Canada’s\nsesquicent ennial\; and a study of the emergence of modern social\nrelations in late 18th century Canada.
