Globally\, ID theft is more than a trillion\ndollars/year industry. Hence\, it is im portant to understand what\nidentity theft is and how to prevent yourself from becoming an ID\ntheft victim. My presentation will focus on different methods of ID\ntheft. It will help you understand the importance of your identity\nand absorb tips to avoid ID theft.\n\nRamesh was born and raised in India and completed his undergraduate\nin food process engineering in 2003 at TNAU (Tamil Nadu\nAgricultural University)\, Coimbatore\,. He had worked for several\nfood processing industries in various capacities for 5 years. He\nstarted his master’s degree program in 2009 winter under the\n supervision of Dr. Valérie Orsat. Now\, he is in his first year of\nthe Ph D program with Dr. Valérie Orsat as his supervisor.\n\n\n\nItem 2: Seminar by Caroline Dufour-L’Arrivée\n\nImprovement of a Biofilter for Treating P iggery Wastewater\n\nBIOSORTM-Manure is an organic biofilter designed by t he Quebec\nIndustrial Research Center (CRIQ). It is used in North America and\nin Europe to treat piggery wastewater. Microbial activities during\nt he treatment allow the conversion of ammonia (NH4+) into\nnon-polluting ga seous nitrogen (N2). However\, sometimes there are\nproblems with the trea tment and then nitrogen is converted into\nnitrogen dioxide (N2O). This is an undesirable gas since its\ngreenhouse effect is about 300 times strong er than that of the\ncarbon dioxide. Hence\, the aim of this study was to minimize the\nN2O emission by controlling several operating parameters tha t\ninfluence the microbial activity in the reactor.\n\nMy PhD project will be on the operation of constructed wetlands to\ntreat urban run-off water . There are two industrial partners in the\nproject. My supervisor is Prof essor Suzelle Barrington. Before I\nstarted on my PhD I did a Master degre e on biological treatment of\nwastewater at Laval University\, department of Civil Engineering\, in\npartnership with the Quebec Industrial Research Center (CRIQ). I am\nalso an agronomist (Laval University) and I biologis t (UQAR -\nRimouski).\n\n\n\nItem 3: Seminar by Deasy Nalley\n\nCoffee Pro duction in Indonesia\n\nIndonesia is the third largest coffee producer in the world. Thus\,\ncoffee is one of the country’s main agricultural export s\, and its\nproduction plays an important role in the economy of the coun try.\nThis presentation aims to broaden our understanding of the coffee\ni ndustry in Indonesia. It will be divided into the following\nsections: (i) the geographic location of Indonesia\; the main\nregions of coffee planta tion\; and the climate of the regions that\nsupport coffee growth\, (ii) a brief history of the industry\;\nstarting with the original introduction of seeds into the country\,\n(iii) the type of coffees grown and processin g methods used\, (iv)\nrelated problems faced by coffee farmers\, includin g diseases\naffecting the plantations as well as the economic problems\naf fecting the farmers’ incomes\, and (v) suggestions on how to deal\nwith th ese problems.\n\nDeasy Nalley is from Indonesia. She completed her Bachelo r of\nScience in Environmental Sciences with First-Class Honours at the\nU niversity of Calgary\, Canada\, in 2007. She is currently working\ntowards her Master’s degree at the Department of Bioresource\nEngineering\, McGil l University\, Canada\, working under the\nsupervision of Dr. Jan Adamowsk i. Her research is in the area of\ntrend estimation and analysis of hydrol ogical data using wavelet\nanalysis and the Mann-Kendall trend test.\n\n\n Item 4: Seminar by Kumaran Sivagnanam\n\nFood vs Fuel\n\nFood prices are r ising and the search for an explanation can\nquickly become a hunt for a s capegoat. Biofuel seems to have become\nthat scapegoat. Media comments abo ut biofuels has become louder and\nlouder\, to the point where it’s now di fficult to hear the real\ndebate. In this presentation the food vs. fuel d ebate will be\nsummarized.\n\nKumaran is currently in his 3rd year as a Ph D. student under the\nsupervision of Dr. Mark Lefsrud.
