 s\, rooted in a common Roman law past. However\, the legal\nhistory of Eur
 ope must not be simplified - the Civil law tradition\nis not a simple gene
 alogical trajectory from Roman law to the\nmodern Civil law codifications.
  Roman law had to be adapted to new\nworlds\; it merged - and clashed - wi
 th local laws and customs.\nFour renowned legal historians\, presenting so
 me of their recent\nwork\, will address different aspects of this complex
