 ulture of optimism\nBarbara Ehrenreich will be talking about the ideology 
 of\npositive thinking\, how the media has helped spread it\, and how it\nh
 as undermined America. 'We need to brace ourselves for a struggle\nagainst
  terrifying obstacles\, both of our own making and imposed by\nthe natural
  world. And the first step is to recover from the mass\ndelusion that is p
 ositive thinking\,' says Ehrenreich. In North\nAmerica\, people have often
  tended to be optimistic about solving\nmajor problems\, but has this opti
 mism helped or hurt them? Can\npositive thinking actually get in the way o
 f finding solutions\,\npreventing people from accurate and critical examin
 ation of a\ncrisis? Barbara Ehrenreich will address that question of optim
 ism:\nwhether\, somehow\, that thinking frames unhappiness\, and critical
 \nthought and speech\, as pathological and counter-productive.\nEhrenreich
 's most recent book is Bright-sided:\nHow the Relentless Promotion of Posi
 tive Thinking has Undermined\nAmerica (published by Metropolitan Books in 
 October\, 2009)\, a\nmyth busting exploration of how America's irrational 
 optimism and\nthe refusal to consider negative outcomes contributed direct
 ly to\nthe current economic crisis.\nBiography: Journalist\, historian\, a
 nd social critic Barbara\nEhrenreich is the author of fifteen books. In 20
 01\, Ehrenreich's\nNickel and\nDimed: On (Not) Getting by in America (Metr
 opolitan Books)\nbecame a New York Times bestseller\, and has since sold o
 ver one\nmillion copies. Nickel and Dimed\, a trenchant examination of\nwo
 rking-class poverty that chronicles Ehrenreich's own attempt to\nlive on m
 inimum wage\, is now required reading at more than 600\nAmerican colleges 
 and universities. In 2005\, Ehrenreich's Bait and\nSwitch\, also a New Yor
 k Times bestseller\, exposed the ever more\nprevalent phenomenon of white-
 collar unemployment. In 2008\,\nMetropolitan Books published This\nLand Is
  Their Land\, a collection of her published columns. A\nfrequent contribut
 or to Harper's and The Nation\, Ehrenreich has\nbeen a columnist at the Ne
 w York Times and Time magazine. In 2004\,\nshe received the Nation Institu
