 y of Medicine\, 91˿����Ƶ).\nWhat is an inflammatory response? How is it trig
 gered and\nterminated? Is inflammation a friend or a foe? We have all\nexp
 erienced the signs of inflammation in the form of redness\,\nswelling and 
 heat around a blister or fever when infected with a\nbacteria or a virus. 
 Indeed\, inflammation is our innate immune\nresponse to “danger”\, be it a
 n invading pathogen\, a skin cut\, or\nthe presence of transformed or dyin
 g cells. The physiological role\nof inflammation is to defend our body and
  restore normalcy or\nhomeostasis. However\, when inflammation is deregula
 ted\, it is at\nthe basis of inflammatory diseases and is the fuel of canc
 er\ngrowth.\n\nIn the last decade\, the master “switches” of inflammation 
 or the\nsensors of “danger” referred to as pathogen/danger recognition\nre
 ceptors have been identified. This discovery has changed\ndramatically the
  way we perceive the role of inflammation in health\nand disease\, leading
  in many cases to direct therapeutic\napplications.\n\nIn this lecture\, I
  will discuss what we have recently learned on\nthe role of our innate imm
 une response in inflammatory diseases and\ncancer\, with a focus on intest
 inal pathologies\, including\ninflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) and colore
 ctal cancer. I will\naddress the conundrum of how we co-exist with a whopp
 ing number of\nbacteria in our gut without eliciting an inflammatory react
 ion\,\nwhether the bacteria in our intestinal flora are “good” or “bad”\,
 \nand whether we could modify our diet to change the composition of\nthese
  bacteria for good health. I will also review the current\ntherapies of IB
 D and colitis-associated cancer and discuss the\npotential need to revisit
