 rs).\nTitle: 'Rhetoric\, ambition and the function of\nthe Cappella Palati
 na in Palermo'\nAbstract: Ernst Kitzinger considered the\narchitecture of 
 the Cappella Palatina to be a ‘mongrel’. In this he\nfollowed Otto Demus\,
  who thought that the presbytery with its\ncupola was built after the mode
 l of a Byzantine domed church\, while\nthe three naves with their reused a
 ntique columns reflect southern\nItalian-Romanesque architecture. Byzantin
 ists\, however\, used to\nbelieve that Sicilian wall mosaics mirror pure C
 onstantinopolitan\nmodels\, and that Sicily could thus be considered as a 
 source for\nmosaics that are no-longer extant in Constantinople itself. Th
 e\nIslamicists\, on the other hand\, are still unable to agree on\nwhether
  the famous painted ceiling of the Palatina should be\nattributed to artis
 ts from Egypt\, north Africa\, the Near East or\nPersia.\n\nAll scholars a
 gree\, however\, that that the Cappella Palatina was a\nroyal commission b
 y king Roger II. The chapel was dedicated in\n1140\, and the cupola mosaic
 s were finished in 1143. Moreover\, no\none doubts that the chapel origina
 ted with the participation of\nByzantine\, Islamic\, Sicilian and Italian 
 artists. In the final\nanalysis\, the chapel is indeed incomparable\, refl
 ecting a unique\nconcept without precedence or following. The basic proble
 ms to be\ndiscussed in the lecture are the following:\n\nHow does a king w
 hose political power and titles were given to\nhim by the pope\, express h
 imself?\nKing Roger II\, himself a Norman\, uled over a foreign territory
 \nconquered in 1092\, inhabited by 80% Muslims and 20% Greeks\,\nLombards 
 and Franks. How did this fact condition his political and\ncultural ambiti
 ons? ?\nWhat\, then\, was specifically Norman\, besides the language\,\nmi
 litary success and the form of government? ?\n\n
